We just found out this week that we are headed for Fort Bliss. We have 1 child (4years old) and looking for a good area (school) for her. She will be in Kindergarten in fall of 2013. Can anyone tell me any gated communities out there. I am not sure of housing yet on post and the waiting list. For those of you who live off post are most of your neighbors military. I am still looking for that military feel even if not on post. That's important to me since my husband will be deploying. Any help is greatly appreciated.
Hello I'm moving to fort bliss during the summer. I have a daughter in honors classes in high school and 2 more kids in elementary school. I was wondering what are the best high schools and elementary schools in the area. What districts should I try to find a house in for those schools? And I just got on the post housing waitlist 60 days out. What is the average wait for a 3-4 bedroom house on post? Any help to steer me in the right direction would be greatly appreciated.
Erica G. asks: Hello I'm about to move to Fort Bliss in El Paso TX. I was wondering where the best places to live are off ba
Kelli O. asks: Can anyone help me with some questions about Fort Bliss please??
My husband and I are PCSing to Fort Bliss at the end of April and it is our first one. All I know is that he will be in the 11th ADA Brigade. I've heard about the long wait lists for post housing so we have been looking on AHRN for a house off post but we will only have one car for awhile so we are wanting something close to his work. Can anyone tell me what zip codes would be close to his brigade that are nice areas?? Thanks so much!!
Heather M. asks: We are pcsing to Fort Bliss in February .. My daughter will be 6 months old then. Looking for information about the ba
Amy L. asks: Can anyone tell how the housing is for Fort Hood Texas and Fort Bliss? We are PCSing there some time before march of next year is there a long waiting list for housing and how are the school any info would be helpful!
Ashley A. asks: Hi ladies! We will be at Bliss in February! We are pcs'ing from Korea! We've been looking at apartments and houses but we're torn between what side of town is "best"! Some say Northeast and then others have told us West...Also looking for opinions on good apartments that accept pets! We have two dogs a shihtzu and an english bulldog! We'd prefer a house if possible but will settle for a nice apartment :) Also we'll more than likely need a hotel for about a week or so when we get there...Any hotels near post that are nice with good prices? All of your info is appreciated! :)
Jessica D. says: Welcome to Ft Bliss :) We used to live on the west side and it was REALLY nice with such an awesome view but it was pretty far from post. It would take him about 45 min to get to work and since he also used the motorcycle to save gas it was horrible to have him coming home almost every day with his stories about almost getting hit/cut off because traffic was terrible since they have the 8 to 5 schedule. So we moved to the east side and even though our apt isn't as great as our old one the neighborhood is very safe. The neighbors watch out for each other and its only 10 min for him to get to work plus he usually gets to come home for lunch :D So I recommend the east side NE is also very close to post and depending what neighborhood hood you choose it can be very nice as well. Good luck!
Marie S. says: Welcome Ashlie! When you first arrive you will have to stay in lodging while youre looking for a house or apartment. My husband and I have been here for a month and are still in lodging since he hasnt been given his 10 days off to get settled. The Welcome Center shuttle will pick you up from the airport and also take you to the hotels on post until youre able to book a room so no worries about not finding a temporary place to stay(:
Aldina R. says: East side for sure. We lived on west and ne but didn't like neither one that much.
Kristen C. says: I recommend living on the East side some parts of the Northeast are ghettoish and more run down the east is fairly new and I love it over here. We are moving from 79936 zip code to 79938 (both east) because we just bought a house on this side
Alie M. says: The east side is really nice. we live in 79938 also and we love it. a lot of the area is brand new construction and there are tons of houses for rent! Apartments out here are outrageously priced. We pay more for our apartment then we would for a regular 3 bd house
Tiffany M. says: I love it here and have lived here twice! The west is way too far. East is good but it depends in what unit he is going to.
Kelsey B. says: Check out www.ahrn.com for houses!!! El Paso has like 8000 zip codes lol. Utilities are expensive in El Paso. Make sure whatever you do DON'T get a place with a swamp cooler! Refrigerated air is a must or you'll melt on the 100°+ summer days. I'd say plan for about $200 /month for utilities + cable/internet. Your electric will most likely be super expensive in the summer. Rent for houses is definitely way cheaper than apartments.
Nicole H. says: Eastside 79936. Try Las Mansiones or Castijella.
Nikki S. says: Are you looking to buy or rent? We bought and pay 700/month for our mortgage.. Granted our home was a foreclosure but it only needs cosmetic stuff done with it. Beautiful quiet neighborhood within walking distance of an elementary school.. Area code 79934...
Lived there for a year for the Academy....there were things I love and things I hated....it takes time and it takes patience just like every single other move.....there are adjustments. Advise to all spouses....join the armywives.com forum.....you will find an enormous amount of information from spouses who have been there and done that just like you who can fill you in on what to expect when where and how just about anywhere in the world. Young spouses and fiances will find this an invaluable asset to them...just don't go into it with the attitude of "I know what I know " because you will get eaten alive.
I've been doing this for 25 years longer then alot of spouses have been alive....I have a daughter in the army....and my husband is still active duty....we know what we know because we have been there done that gotten raked over the coals screwed over and can give you the advise we give because of it...so join it or cinchouse and get the answers you dont know so that you dont run into the issues you are facing moving to a new duty station wondering the if's and the why's.....because the housing has its rules for reasons period! that is why.....I have had to live off post before because there WAS NO HOUSING AT ALL.....had to buy a house sell it 355 days later because we had to move yet again....don't use the word UNFAIR....because nothing about the miltiary is ever fair get over it and move on....this is your life live it its wonderful if you let it be.
by the way I loved El Paso moved there from Germany CULTURE SHOCK was not the word for how I felt but I made the best of the time I had there like I do in all the 14 places I have lived in 25 years....because complaining GETS YOU NO WHERE.....except a life of regret....and living on the ba
Ive been at fort stewart for 6 years. I just found out we are moving to fort bliss. The wait list is over 2 months to move in. They should have planned for familys to move and why should we live in a hotel room till the time being. Its like the hired non military dont care for soldiers. I tried getting branch to delete my orders there but they said they need ncos there so i had to go. The employees forgot they work for us we dont work for them. So i kinda rased a little hell with housing and guess what we will have a place in 2-3 weeks strange huh. But i herd there are no a/cs there whats up with that
We moved to Fort Bliss in March of 2010. This is our first Duty Station. As far as the installation itself it is great. It has grown leaps and bounds since we first moved here. Freedom Crossing has everything you need and continues to add things. I delivered my youngest a month after we moved here at William Beaumont and since it was a VBAC I was a little nervous however in my opinion it was a great experience. Everything went smoothly and I was monitored very carefully in case I needed an emergency c-section. Honestly I am happy with the installation. They just opened the new commissary in June. They are opening another hospital over on East Bliss (Biggs). They continue to add housing (which is very much needed). El Paso itself I'm not thrilled with. It's not BAD. There is pretty much anything you need or want here. Restaurants shopping etc... It doesn't help that I hate the desert and I'd rather live in a smaller city/town. LOL If you like the desert maybe you wouldn't mind it here. I miss green and true seasons. The area right around the installation isn't great but it's kind of in the middle of the city and from what I hear they are working on cleaning it up. A new Walmart is being built just outside the Post and right down the street from the off-Post Housing so I think that will be nice. Overall I cannot wait to get out of here and I'm kind of disappointed with this as a first duty station HOWEVER I cannot complain too much about the actual installation. It has more to do with the area and the unit.
